Private Melissani Cave Tours: Booking a VIP or Bespoke Day
This page is the single home for private and VIP Melissani Cave tours, covering the municipality's own private tour, the operators who publish private-tour prices, and how a private day compares with a small-group or self-drive visit; for group tours and combo packages start with our Melissani Cave tours hub, and for villas, charters and island-wide luxury see the luxury Kefalonia guide.
There is no single Melissani private tour. The cave sells one private product of its own, a guided tour outside peak hours, while local operators sell private island days that stop at the cave. Knowing which is which, and what each one actually includes, is most of the decision.
The municipal private tour and the priority ticket
The Municipality of Sami publishes two premium admission options. A private guided tour outside peak hours costs €400 for both caves, and a priority ticket costs €40 for both caves. The standard adult ticket is €10, with a reduced ticket of €5 for children aged 6 to 18, students, visitors over 65 and multi-child families.
Two things the municipality does not say matter as much as what it does. Its Greek wording for the private tour means "not during peak hours": the visit still sits inside the published opening day, not outside it. It also describes neither what the private tour covers nor what the priority ticket does, so a faster line is not something you can assume from the label.
Book the municipal private tour by phone on +30 26740 22997 for Melissani or +30 26740 23302 for Drogarati, as the municipality publishes no online booking for it. Last entry is thirty minutes before closing, and current timings are on our Melissani Cave opening hours page.
Operators that publish private-tour prices
Five operators publish private-tour prices on their own websites. Every figure below was read from those sites on 5 October 2026, and where an operator excludes the cave entrance fees we say so.
Avalon Travel Kefalonia
Avalon runs a six-hour Kefalonia Highlights Private Tour for groups of one to twelve, priced by group size: €1,280 for one or two guests, rising to €1,747 for eleven or twelve. Entry fees for both caves, transfers from your hotel or the port, and the lake boat are included, and Avalon describes the boat circuit as ten to fifteen minutes.
Kefalonia Daily Tours
Kefalonia Daily Tours sells a five-hour private Kefalonia Jewels tour for up to eight guests at €260, with the cave entry fees and a Robola winery tasting included, and pick-up from Argostoli, Lassi or Lourdas. A private eight-hour All in a Day tour that covers both caves is €330.
Kefalonia Tours
Kefalonia Tours tags its private products as price per group. A six-hour Half-Day Private Kefalonian Tour is published from €200 per group, and an eight-to-ten-hour Full-Day Private Tour from €220 per group. Entrance fees are not included.
Adventure Kefalonia
Adventure Kefalonia prices explicitly per group: a ten-hour Full Day Sightseeing trip covering Melissani, Antisamos, Myrtos, Assos and Fiskardo is €420 for one or two people, plus €30 for each extra person. A luxury car with an English- or Spanish-speaking driver is included, while entrance fees are not. A six-hour Central Kefalonia Highlights private tour starts from €240.
Avgerinos Travel Experience
Avgerinos, based in Sami, publishes private tours of four, six and eight hours from €200, €300 and €480 on its own booking site. The same agency runs a Thursday group excursion to Melissani, Drogarati and Antisamos at €45 per person, with the entrance fees excluded.
Private, small-group or self-drive
Three ways to see the cave, with very different price structures.
A private tour: your own vehicle and driver
You pay for the vehicle and the driver's time, which is why prices are quoted per group. Published private prices run from about €150 to €480 per group for half or full days, rising to around €1,280 for a couple on Avalon's six-hour luxury itinerary.
A small-group tour: one seat in a shared vehicle
Cheaper per head, but fixed in route and pace. Small-group departures start at €45 per person for Avgerinos' Thursday excursion and rise to about €65 per person for a full island day with Kefalonia Daily Tours, and the cave entrance fees are usually extra.
Self-drive and walk-up tickets
You drive to Sami or Karavomylos, park at the cave, buy your ticket at the gate, and pay €10 as an adult or €5 reduced, then add Drogarati for €4 on showing your Melissani ticket instead of €6. Then you queue for the shared boat and keep an eye on the clock, because last entry is thirty minutes before closing. Our guide to how to get to Melissani Cave covers the drive.
No operator publishes a queue guarantee. Visitor reviews from July 2026 describe waits of roughly twenty-five to forty-five minutes, and up to about two hours in the 12:00 to 14:00 peak, so an early arrival remains the simplest way to avoid the crush.
What a private tour does not buy
- The boat. Melissani's lake is crossed in a shared rowboat with a rower, and a private tour buys the day around you rather than a private vessel.
- Every entrance fee. Avalon and Kefalonia Daily Tours include the cave tickets, while Kefalonia Tours, Adventure Kefalonia and Avgerinos do not. The municipality publishes no inclusions for its €400 private tour at all, so confirm them on the phone.
- A longer boat ride. The circuit lasts about ten to twenty minutes, with the operators quoting ten to fifteen.
- Entry outside the published day. No source documents a visit slot beyond the cave's ordinary opening hours, so plan around the 09:00 to 18:00 summer schedule.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a private Melissani Cave tour cost?
The municipality's private guided tour outside peak hours is €400 for both caves. Operators publish private days from about €150 to €480 per group, rising to about €1,280 for a couple on a six-hour luxury itinerary.
Can I visit the cave after it closes?
No source supports that. The municipality's wording means "not during peak hours", so its private tour still sits inside published opening hours; in summer 2026 the caves are open daily from 09:00 to 18:00, with last entry thirty minutes before closing.
Is the boat private on a private tour?
No. The lake is crossed in the same shared rowboat used by every other visitor.
What is the €40 priority ticket?
It is a municipal admission product covering both caves. The municipality publishes the price but not a description of what it does, so confirm the details when you call +30 26740 22997.
How long is the boat ride at Melissani?
Sources put the lake circuit at about ten to twenty minutes, with the operators and the Greek tourism authority quoting ten to fifteen.
